Ben Glaetzer 2006 Release

We've been a fan of Ben's wines for a good four years now, and on top of all that he's a surprisingly decent, down-to-earth bloke considering a) he's an Ozzie b) he's a winemaker and c) he's got 100 Parker points under his belt. And the great news is that Lucy, a local lass who started her career in wine at DeFINE is marrying him next year- and I fixed them up! As a result, allocations are, shall we say, healthy!

And he's gone and done it again. Yet another astonishing range of reviews from the world's most influential journal, (Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate) including another 100 pointer, has surely cemented Ben's reputation as the hottest winemaker in the 'icon' class of wine.

These are big, show-stopping wines that still have a degree of finesse to underpin their palate-saturating intensity.

2006 Glaetzer Amon-Ra
£36.50/bt

Now in its 6th release, the slower ripening in the Shiraz this year lead to huge intensity and perfume without any of the hot, jammy flavours often found in over-exposed fruit. It shows the freshness and refinement of the 04 release with tannin structure and ageability of the 05.

Wine Advocate Rating:
97-100 points

"Amon-Ra has become one of Australia's icon wines. Made from 100% Shiraz sourced from vineyards ranging in age from 80-120 years and with microscopic yields of 0.5 tons per acre, the 2006 Amon-Ra was aged for 15 months in new French and American oak. The wine is a thick, glass-coating, purple/black in color. The aromas cover a wide range of scents including smoke, vanilla, pepper, Asian spices, coconut, espresso, blueberry, and chocolate. Thick, rich, layered, and complete, this monumental wine offers extraordinary intensity and length. It requires 10-15 years to fully evolve and should easily last through 2040. Hats off to Ben Glaetzer for producing an extraordinary portfolio! The renowned winemaker sources all of his fruit for this label from the Ebenezer district in the northern Barossa. Many knowledgeable experts cite this sub-region as the finest in the Valley".

2006 Glaetzer Anaperenna
£26.95/bt

The Cabernet component was raised to 25% for this vintage, because the quality was so high. The Shiraz is sourced from similar parcels to the Amon Ra, the primary differenct being that the Anaperenna Shiraz needed to be slightly more reserved in expression to enable the purity of the Cabernet to be displayed on both the nose and the palate.

Wine Advocate Rating:
94-97 points

"The 2006 Shiraz (75%) - Cabernet Sauvignon (25%) "Anaperenna" is the wine formerly known as Godolphin, the change resulting from a trademark dispute. It was aged for 15 months in new French and American oak. Opaque purple, it offers a sensational bouquet of pain grille, scorched earth, meat, game, blueberry, and black currants. This is followed by a surprisingly elegant yet powerful, structured wine with gobs of spicy fruit, ripe tannins, and a plush texture. The long, 60-second finish is succulent and sweet. Give this classy wine 4-6 years in the cellar and enjoy it through 2030".

2006 Glaetzer Bishop
£16.95/bt

The 8th release, and probably the most seriously structure to date. It's a striking mouthful already, but could ideally do with a couple of years to fully express its broodingly spicy fruit.

Wine Advocate Rating:
92-94 points

"The 2006 Bishop was sourced from 60-year-old vines and aged for 14 months in used French and American oak. Purple/black in color, it has an expressive nose of cedar, smoke, game, bacon, and blueberry. On the palate this medium to full-bodied wine is tightly wound but has all the right stuff. There are tons of ripe fruit and silky tannin, excellent balance and a long finish, but the wine will need 8-10 years to fully display its personality. It will easily last through 2036".

2006 Glaetzer Wallace
£11.50/bt

"The 2006 Wallace, tasted from a barrel sample, is a 70% Shiraz, 30% Grenache blend with an identical oak treatment. The 2006 is more structured than the 2005 but they could otherwise pass as identical twins".
